This bone surgery is best done while the kitten is young and heals fast, 4-6 months of age. The claws are removed under anesthetic, and they are hospitalized for 1-2 days, allowing time for the pads to begin healing. Extra pain medication is recommended. Generally only a front foot declaw is recommended for indoor cats. If a family member has very thin skin or other health issues, or the cat is a resident of a nursing home, a four foot declaw may be desired. This naturally costs twice as much.
