What a Pain in the Bladder: Bladder Stones

This massive half-pound stone was removed from the urinary bladder of a 19 pound dog! Bladder stones can form due to excess levels of certain minerals in the diet coupled with extremes in urine pH (some individuals are sensitive and form stones easily) or infection. Many can be dissolved by diet, but this monster tried to keep growing. Urinary stones can plug the body’s plumbing, causing a life threatening urinary obstruction, as well as pain and blood. Minor cases may mimic a common bladder infection.
